Google Pixel 4a is likely to come out to follow on from last year’s Pixel 3a. The mid budget phone from last year has seen great success so what can we expect from this year’s 4a?
I’ll go over all the rumors and speculations about the Pixel 4a in this article.
But what other upgrades will come to the Pixel 4a; bigger screen? Better battery? And what about cost?

When will Pixel 4 come out?
Google Pixel 4a was expected to be announced during this year’s I/O. As last year’s Pixel 3a was revealed during the I/O event.
However, this years I/O event was scheduled to occur in May but due to the coronavirus pandemic, it has now been cancelled. Right now we are not sure how the cancellation will affect the release of the Pixel 4a but google rumors are that google are likely to proceed with the reveal soon anyways.
There was a leaked document from a German Tech Blog saying that the Pixel 4a will arrive in the store shelves on May 22. And that would be have been perfect on paper for the launch at Google I/O event – if it had not been cancelled.
Though, the same German Tech Blog has stated that the launch of the Pixel 4a may be potentially pushed back to a later date – June 5.
If Google is planning to release their new Pixel 4a on that date, it will line up perfectly as Google are hosting an online event to show details on the new and upcoming Android 11 on June 3.
So for Google to launch their new Pixel 4a two days after Android 11 reveals, it would make sense from their schedules. Even last year’s Pixel 3a was launched the same day that Android 10 came to the market.
But there are other sources that suggest the reveal of the Pixel 4a could come sooner than June 3.
How much will pixel 4a cost?
We’re expecting the cost of the new Pixel 4a to be in the mid budget ranged. Last year’s Pixel 3a costs $399 and the Pixel 3a XL costs $479.
For this year, the Pixel 4a is likely to cost $399 as there was a leaked billboard render of the product that started the price from $399.
How about the different models? Well according to XDA developers there were two names that were found for the Pixel 4a: Sunfish and Bramble. XDA developers also found these names in an update for the Google Camera Apple.
So referencing from last year’s Pixel 3a and Pixel 3a XL models, XDA developers believe that Sunfish and Bramble correspond to the Pixel 4a and Pixel 4a XL models.
However, popular Youtuber Dave Lee offers a different source of rumors. According to Dave, he believes that for the first time ever in the Pixel a line-up, Google will not offer the XL version of the Pixel 4a this year.
The reasoning? Well, Google has major success with the Pixel 3a line-up last year – Which sold more than the Pixel 3 line-ups and they want to continue that success.
Ok so why would they remove the XL variant then? If pricing is the same as the 3a line-up, Pixel 3a was $399 and the Pixel 3a XL was $479. Meaning this is a $80 difference for a bigger screen.
And if you’re in the market for a mid-budget phone, an $80 premium isn’t worth the jump for most people. So Google might want to focus all the attention and make the Pixel 4a a huge success.
What is expected of pixel 4a?
Google Pixel 4a is expected to come with a full plastic body with two colors: Black body with a green power button, and white body with an orange power button. But also with a possibility of a third color – Light blue body with a hot pink power button.
The screen size for the Pixel 4a is 5.81 inches – which is bigger than last year’s Pixel 3a screen. The Pixel 4a will also rock the hole punch camera in the top corner of the screen so it will be pretty much bezel less.
The screen is rumored to have an OLED display with a full HD+ resolution. As for the refresh rate – which has been all the craze in the market today, it is unknown if Google will give the Pixel 4a 90Hz refresh rate as the cost of implementation is quite high for a mid-budget phone. (Especially since the Pixel 4 was not a success at all and that phone has 90Hz refresh rate)
And the ever loved fingerprint scanner on the back of the Pixel will also be in place for Google’s new Pixel 4a. The quick, reliable physical unlock that is disappearing from today’s smartphone markets will be appreciated by the Pixel fans.
Pixel 4a 5G
Snapdragon’s 765 chipset inbuilt 5G capabilities was rumored to be adopted by Google’s Pixel 4a phone.
But it is also rumored that the Pixel 4a will have the Snapdragon 730 chipset instead, which does not come with 5G capabilities.
Pixel 4a Camera
The Pixel line-up by Google have had some of the best camera when it comes to the smartphone market – due to Google’s superior camera software processing.
From Google’s most recent phones (3a and 4), it looks like the Pixel 4a will be following in 3a in having only one camera – A 12.2 megapixel camera.
But does that not mean it’s bad, in fact there already has been leaks from some of the Pixel 4a’s camera samples. The samples look very similar to Google’s Pixel 4.
Leaks have also shown the dual exposure feature in the new Pixel 4a but for a phone with one camera, did google manage to get it working with their software?
The hole punch camera in the front of the screen will feature a 8 megapixel sensor.
Pixel 4a headphone Jack
As for the ever dying breed of the headphone jack, will it be on the latest Pixel 4a? The Pixel 3a had a headphone jack so if the Pixel 4a keeps this feature, it wouldn’t be surprising.
But, with its design being very similar to the Samsung Galaxy S20 and the One Plus 8 Pro, it is not unreasonable to see the headphone Jack go.
Google maybe decide to keep the headphone jack for the ‘a’ series line-up but we will see.
