Samsung is bringing back the microSD card：Are you excited?

As long as sophistication in the smartphone industry is concerned, Samsung remains a top runner. Talking about flagships that have made their mark, the Galaxy S lineup is without a doubt one of Samsung’s oldest flagship series. If there’s anything I like about Samsung, it is the fact that Samsung is a global pioneer of innovative tech to make life easier for their fans.

For instance, one of Samsung’s notable advancements is the Galaxy S9. The smartphone was the first of its kind to record 4K video at 60 frames per second. This recording ability for the S9 marked a significant leap that allows users to capture high-quality video with smooth motion and detail. Before Samsung introduced them, the new features were previously only available in professional cameras.

Apart from the ability to record 4K video at 60 frames per second, the original Galaxy S smartphone also made history as the very first to feature a 4-inch AMOLED screen. With these and many more, it is evident that Samsung has consistently been at the forefront of technological innovations. We can see that this trend of innovation has continued with each new iteration of the Galaxy S lineup making it a key player in the smartphone market.

Now the big question: what should we expect from the Samsung Galaxy S25?

Above all the desires and speculations of Samsung fans, one thing that has generated so much attention is the possible comeback of expandable storage for the Samsung Galaxy S25. There are speculations that microSD cards are coming back to top-of-the-line Android devices, beginning with the Samsung S25.

But how true can this be?

Talking about storage, the current flagship (S24) has an internal storage capacity of 256GB while the S24 plus can offer up to 512GB of internal storage. For the high end S24 Ultra, you can get a whooping 1TB. But here’s the thing; the higher the storage, the more you should be prepared to spend. For instance, the S24 Ultra will cost you well over $1,000. But that’s not even my major concern. My main concern is that the latest Samsung Galaxy S Series have the ability to record 8K videos. With this ability, one can easily run out of storage sooner than expected. This means that you’d need more storage especially if you intend to do a lot of video shooting with your smartphone.

Before we go on, let’s see some of the advantages and disadvantages of microSD card.

Now let’s take updates for instance. Samsung promised to offer users seven years of operating system and security updates. But do you even know that as time goes by and as phones age, new apps, high-resolution photos and videos fill up your phone’s internal storage? Also, with the evolution of AI, we just can’t know it all when it comes to storage. We can’t say for now how much storage space would be required by Samsung Galaxy AI. However, we can assume that it won’t be too far different from Google’s basic AI package that requires about 7GB on Pixel phones. Notwithstanding, one sure thing is that AI will only keep evolving and this will undoubtedly mean more storage over time, especially for AI that runs on-device.

At this juncture, readopting microSD could be the only way out. Here is why I think readopting microSD is a go-go; if microSD are adopted, it will avail users the opportunity to save a few bucks on their phone with plans to later expand their phone storage as the need arises. Furthermore, I believe that readopting microSD can play a major role in extending the longevity of Samsung phones. Overall, we’ve seen Samsung in the past removed SD card slots from the S6 and later reintroduced it with the S7 the following year. As a result, Samsung has high chances of returning to the microSD card, and we can’t wait to see that happen with the S25.
