Most people don't lose their charger. They lose the cable that goes with it, left on the hotel nightstand, borrowed by the person in the next seat, or buried at the bottom of a bag tangled with earphones. The charging adapter makes it back home. The cable doesn't.
The ESR Xtend 45W Retractable Charger addresses that small but familiar travel annoyance with a USB-C cable built directly into the charger. Pull it out when needed and retract it after use. This guide covers the design changes, how 45W output fits different devices, and where the charger is most useful.
Why Carrying the Cable Can Be More Annoying Than Carrying the Charger
A charger is easy to keep in one place in your bag. Cables are less predictable. They can get tangled with other accessories or get left behind when you pack up.
The problem is more noticeable when you carry multiple devices. Charging a laptop and phone separately often means keeping track of two cables, even when both can draw power from the same wall charger.
A built-in retractable cable reduces that loose-accessory count by one.
What Changes When the USB-C Cable Is Built Into the Charger
The Xtend 45W has a built-in 3.1 ft braided USB-C cable that pulls out when needed and retracts into the charger body after use.
The folding wall plug lies flat against the body for packing, while a second USB-C port supports charging another device. The housing measures 64 × 53 × 29.5 mm and is available in White, Black, and Burgundy, with US and JP plug options.
What Do You Still Need to Pack?
The built-in cable covers one USB-C connection. For multi-device or older-device setups, a few things are still worth knowing before you travel.
| Your setup | What the Xtend 45W covers | What you still need |
|---|---|---|
| USB-C iPhone only | Built-in USB-C cable | Nothing extra |
| USB-C iPhone + USB-C AirPods | Built-in cable for one; second port for the other | One short USB-C cable |
| iPad | Built-in USB-C cable | Nothing extra |
| MacBook Air | Built-in USB-C cable | Nothing extra |
| MacBook Air + USB-C iPhone | Built-in cable for the laptop; second port for the phone | One USB-C cable |
| Two USB-C phones | Built-in cable for one; second port for the other | One USB-C cable |
| Lightning iPhone | Second USB-C port can be used | USB-C to Lightning cable |
| Apple Watch | Second USB-C port can power the Watch cable | Apple Watch charging cable |
The built-in cable reduces what you need to pack, but device compatibility and available charging power still determine whether one charger suits your entire setup.
Is 45W Enough for the Devices You Actually Travel With?
The Xtend 45W is designed for everyday charging across phones, tablets, and compatible laptops. With USB PD 3.2 it supports dynamic 45–60W peak power. For the technical explanation of how GaN enables that in a housing this size, the GaN charger guide covers it.
Whether it suits your setup depends on each device's power requirements and whether you're charging one device or two.
The following comparison shows where 45W is a practical fit and where a higher-output charger may be more suitable.
| Typical setup | How well 45W fits | Practical takeaway |
|---|---|---|
| USB-C iPhone | Strong fit | The phone draws only the power it supports |
| iPad / iPad Air / iPad Pro | Strong fit for everyday use | Works well for travel and regular charging; actual rate varies by iPad model |
| MacBook Air | Good fit | Suitable for travel and everyday charging; actual power intake varies by model |
| MacBook Air + phone | Convenient, with a trade-off | Both charge from one outlet; total output is shared between the two ports |
| MacBook Pro | Situational | Can work for charging or lighter use; demanding workloads may require more power |
| Gaming or workstation laptop | Poor fit | 45W is below the intended charging class for these devices |
One Charger, Three Places: Airport, Desk, and Bedside
Airport, Cafés, and Travel Stops
At an airport gate, hotel, or café, the built-in cable means you don't have to pull out a separate cable and connect it to the charger. Pull out the cable, plug in the charger, and connect your device.
The difference is small during a single charging session, but useful when you frequently move between charging spots.
Desk
For a laptop-and-phone setup, the built-in cable connects to the MacBook Air while the second USB-C port powers the phone through a separate cable. Both devices can charge from one outlet, with less loose cable to manage than a conventional setup.
For workspaces with multiple monitors and peripherals, you may still need additional cable management.
Bedside
On a nightstand, the retractable cable lets you extend only as far as you need to reach your phone, leaving the unused portion inside the charger.
The second USB-C port can power another device through its own cable, such as an Apple Watch charging cable or a USB-C cable for AirPods. If you prefer wireless phone charging overnight, an ESR wireless charging pad is another option.
What Does a 3.1 ft Retractable Cable Feel Like in Everyday Use?
The 3.1 ft cable works best when the outlet and device are relatively close together. Its suitability depends on the outlet's position and the path the cable must follow, not just the straight-line distance.
At a desk or nightstand, consider whether the cable needs to run around furniture or behind a surface. At an airport or café, check whether the outlet is positioned close enough to your seat.
How to check before traveling
Test your setup with a 1-meter cable you already own. Route it from the outlet to your device along the path you would actually use. If it reaches with comfortable slack, the Xtend 45W's 3.1 ft cable should be suitable for that setup. If it barely reaches, pack a longer cable as a backup.
Heat, Safety, and Long-Term Cable Use
Heat and safety
A charger with a cable stored inside its housing may raise questions about heat management. The Xtend 45W includes temperature monitoring and over-voltage, over-current, and short-circuit protection. It is also TÜV certified.
Cable durability
The built-in cable has been tested for 20,000 retraction operations and 10,000 bending cycles. These figures describe the tests performed, not a guaranteed service life. Actual durability depends on how often you use the cable and how you handle it.
Avoid forcing the cable into sharp bends where it exits the housing, and follow the manufacturer’s care guidelines.
Who Is the Xtend 45W Best For — and Who Needs More Power?
A good fit for:
- Travelers who carry a USB-C phone, iPad, or MacBook Air and want to pack one fewer cable
- Students who move between classes with a laptop and phone.
- Desk setups that benefit from fewer loose cables.
- People who charge one device most of the time and occasionally charge a second.
Worth reconsidering if:
- Your laptop needs more power than the Xtend 45W can supply for your typical workload.
- You regularly need to charge three or more devices at once.
- You rely on a USB-A port and don't want to carry an adapter or alternative cable.
ESR Xtend 45W AVS GaN Retractable Wall Charger
Color: White | Plug: US
Leave one less loose cable in your bag. The built-in 3.1 ft retractable USB-C cable stores inside the charger, while an extra USB-C port lets you charge a second device. PD 3.2 AVS and PPS support fast charging on compatible devices, and the foldable US plug tucks away for travel.

FAQs About Using a Retractable Wall Charger
Can I use the built-in cable and the second USB-C port at the same time?
Yes. Both can charge devices simultaneously, sharing the available power between them.
What happens if my laptop needs more than 45W?
The charger supplies power up to its output limit. If the laptop draws more power than the charger can provide during demanding use, charging may slow, or the battery level may still fall. Check the laptop's recommended input wattage if you plan to use the Xtend 45W as your main laptop adapter.
Do I still need a cable for Apple Watch or Lightning devices?
Yes. Lightning devices require a compatible USB-C-to-Lightning cable. Apple Watch requires its own charging cable, which connects to the second USB-C port.
Can I use the cable at a shorter extension, or does it have to be fully pulled out?
Pull out the length you need, up to 3.1 ft. You don't need to use the full cable length for a shorter connection.
